Why We Created Content Lion

On December 7th, 2023, Oracle announced the end of a wonderful product called “Oracle Content Management”. (OCM). Fortunately, Oracle gave all customers a two-year heads up to find a new home.

OCM was a fantastic solution but clearly Oracle did not want to be in the content business anymore. Yet OCM had a rabid cult following for a reason - it was modern, versatile content management platform. It performed well and it lay at the foundation of content, publishing, sharing, distributing and headless content.

On the day of the announcement David G. Ewing and Cassandra W. Paul (soon to be co-founders of Content Lion) were the CEO and President of Motiv - an OCM customer as well as implementation partner for Oracle. David and Cassie personally knew a great deal of the customers, partners and agencies who designed implemented and operated OCM.

The team got to work to discover the best OCM replacement for themselves and their clients, but they ran into a problem. . .

Content Lion's First Mission

Cassie and David had set out to accomplish on mission. Find a new home for every OCM customer, so that’s exactly what they decided should be the first mission of Content Lion:

Find a New Home for Every OCM customer by December 31st, 2025.

That mission began with a lot of discussion with a lot of customers, partners and agencies. As they discussed the problem, there were a wide range of slutions. Some companies immediately buckled down, found a replacement set of solutions and migrated -  very costly, but it is said that “if you can afford to throw money at a problem, you often don’t have a problem.”

Many more companies paused to revaluate their options. David and Cassie recruited OCM general manager, Chris Stone, to join as an advisor. Then they recruited John Witten to help capitalize the company. At least one other new competitor arrived on the scene. As Content Lion was in early development the explored joining forces but could not make that ork. Content Lion development began in August of 2024 with a vision to make a minimum viable product in 5 months.

By January of 2025 Content Lion 1.0 Launched to much fan fare. Eight companies joined immediately. As the new customers onboarded, Content Lion eradicated bugs and built additional features. Motiv was the first company migrated to Content Lion in March. By May 31st the product achieved SOC 2 certification and adoption began to soar. More customers joined in the second wave.

As wave 3 beings, Content Lion celebrates a full year of rapid development and boasts a complete product that has nearly all the features of OCM plus a great deal more. The biggest difference between OCm and Content Lion is the presence of AI. Content Lion is the first digital experience platform built in the age of AI. As such, Content lion has matured past OCM and become something more - an open, integrated digital experience platform capable of orchestrating content and experience flows across applications.

The Digital Experience Platform Born in the Age of AI
